Service Summary

Filter Press Technology
Onyx prepares the sludge for the filter press by screening it, mixing it, and chemically conditioning it as necessary. The conditioned sludge is pumped to the filter press using high-pressure, fast-fill, centrifugal feed pumps to maximize the production rate and enhance the filter cake quality (high pressure).
Belt Press Technology
The sludge is injected with the polymer in-line then passed through a static mixer to flocculate the solid particles. The conditioned sludge is pumped to the belt press using positive displacement feed pumps so as not to shear the floc formed by the polymer make-down and injection process.
Centrifuge
Typically, the centrifuge will require a polymer to flocculate the solid particles and perhaps a de-emulsifier to break emulsified oil/water/solid streams. The sludge is injected with the polymer (and de-emulsifier if necessary) in-line then passed through a static mixer to flocculate the solid particles (and water wet the solids by the action of the de-emulsification agent). Oily waste streams often benefit from heating (180 degrees F) to decrease viscosity and enhance the ultimate oil/water/solid separation. The conditioned sludge is pumped to and through the centrifuge using positive displacement feed pumps so as not to shear the floc formed by the polymer make-down and injection process.
Dryer Technology
Onyx owns and operates thermal dryers used to remove additional water and organic constituents from centrifuge or filter press cake to maximize the volume reduction of hazardous/listed waste streams. The addition of a thermal dryer to a sludge separation/solids recovery process can often result in an overall waste volume reduction of 98%.






Sludge Treatability Laboratory
Onyx owns and operates a modern, full-service sludge treatability laboratory located in Ashland, Kentucky. Our lab is equipped with bench top test equipment that simulates full-scale process equipment and can predict actual field results based on representative sludge samples. The lab tests and evaluates every sludge sample for using every possible chemical (e.g., polymer, coagulant, filter aids, etc.) and mechanical (e.g., filter press, belt press, centrifuge, dryer, etc.) separation/dewatering technology.

Evaluation of Sludge Sample Properties (pH, %solids, density, etc.)

Bench top tests and lab analysis of chemical pre-treatment options (polymers, flocculants, coagulants, filter aids such as DE, perlite, lime/ferric, etc.)

Bench top simulation of Belt Press, Filter Press, Centrifuge & Dryer Technologies

Evaluation of each technology and the resulting Cake Quality (dry solids, density, BTU, etc.)

Evaluation of each technology and the resulting Water/Oil Quality (TSS, BS&W, etc.)
